Most everyone down there would agree that Lauren Knowles is one of the nicest men ever to skipper any boat in the Bahamas. He never raises his voice, to competitors, to his children. He is quietly but firmly sympatico with his bombastic and gregarious wife. He is one of the famous Knowles boatbuilders of Deadman’s Cay, Long Island, Bahamas. Here he is sailing “the New Chase” to victory, in the days before “Tari Ann” got cut and modernized, before it was a match race between those two boats in “B” class. He is famous for that hat. No matter what happens, no matter how hard it blows two things never change. It’s always Stephan Knowles doing bow man. And the hat always stays on his head. “Lauren Knowles and the Hat” resides in Palm Shores, Florida, only a couple hundred miles downwind of Exuma.
